One of the wonders of modern medicine is that for the most part you and I don’t have to deal with leprosy.  It’s good to be thankful for those things I guess.  But that doesn’t mean we don’t know sickness or suffering does it?

In fact it just ... Read More »

We hear one of the greatest prayers in the whole of Sacred Scripture this weekend ‘Lord, increase our faith!’ We all need that don’t we - an increase of faith.  This past week we were blessed in a particular way with a profound example of faith in the feast ... Read More »

For weeks now I’ve been running a blurb in the bulletin from Saint Ignatius that says “If our Church is not marked by care for the poor, the oppressed, the hungry, then we are guilty of heresy.” I love that quote - cause it’s uncomfortable.

One of my most favorite lines from the Psalms we hear today - from Psalm 113.  From the dunghill the Lord lifts up the poor.

Poverty at it’s heart is a lack of something - usually money, who doesn’t want more of that - but perhaps even more ... Read More »

Our Mother of Sorrows is one of those titles of Mary I don’t know if you spend much time with.  I know I really don’t, but the truth of the matter is that I should.

You and I tend to know all kinds of sorrows in our ... Read More »

Every now and then we see the sign out there that says “The most important thing, is to keep the most important thing, the most important thing.” That’s what our Gospel speaks of this weekend.  The importance of hating your family.  No wait, that’s not it.

Jesus proclaims to ... Read More »

Happy Feast Day! Every year on this day we hear the same Gospel reading - the call of Bartholomew.

And every year the exact same part of that story always stands out for me.  The comment about why Jesus chose Bartholomew - ‘he found no duplicity in him.’

Our patron saint has a lot of interceding to do for us.  Because Bartholomew had a great purity in his faith, and for that Jesus promised that he would see far greater things than he could have ... Read More »

This weekend the Deacons of the Diocese are on retreat. I went over to help with confessions on Friday, and before we started we were talking just outside the chapel.  I leaned against this wall that separated the chapel from the vestibule, and all of the sudden I noticed ... Read More »

One of the best descriptions of faith I ever heard compared it to a glass of water.  We are the glass.  Faith is the water.  When we are young, our glass is very small, and so it doesn’t take much water to fill it.  But as we grow older, ... Read More »

Vanity is a powerful thing.  It pervades our lives.  It pervades our world.         All the focus on self.  Instead of the focus on Jesus.  If we spent 10% of the energy on Jesus that we spend on ourselves, then so much in our lives, our families, our ... Read More »
